Pay is the frank weak point. Per diems on long-haul rotations — Brazil and Africa especially — are what make months financially workable, and senior crew and chefes de cabine on intercontinental patterns earn a livable but never lavish EUR 2,200-3,300. The counterweight is Lisbon itself: an inexpensive, sun-blessed base city, though rising tourist-era rents have eroded that advantage.

The airline's ownership saga colours everything: privatisation negotiations with major European groups have kept long-term fleet and hiring plans in flux, and recruitment happens in periodic bursts rather than continuously, typically requiring fluent Portuguese and English. For Portuguese-speaking crew, TAP offers real long-haul flying, strong union protection and a lifestyle roster; those chasing top-tier pay look north or to the Gulf.
