Overview

Gulf Air is the elder statesman of Gulf aviation — founded in 1950 and once the shared flag carrier of four Gulf states before Emirates, Qatar Airways and Etihad went their own ways. Today it is Bahrain's national airline, flying around 35 aircraft (787-9s and A320neo-family jets) from Manama to some 50 destinations across the Gulf, the subcontinent, Asia and Europe, with a service culture that leans on decades of hospitality tradition.

Bahrain is the quiet advantage of this job. The island is the most socially liberal base in the Gulf: alcohol is legal, the causeway to Saudi Arabia brings weekend visitors rather than restrictions, costs are lower than Dubai, and the expat community is long-established. The crew community is small and familial, rosters mix regional hops with a modest long-haul program to London, Paris and Asia, and crew consistently describe colleagues and passengers as the friendliest part of the airline.

The honest downside is money and momentum. Total pay sits well below the big Gulf carriers — competitive against Bahraini living costs but a different league from Emirates or Qatar — and the airline's growth has been cautious for years as Bahrain lacks its neighbours' oil wealth. A 2025 order for more 787s signals ambition, and hiring does happen, but in periodic waves. Gulf Air suits crew who want Gulf flying with a livable, low-drama base and are honest with themselves about the pay gap.

Base & accommodation

Manama · Allowance

A housing allowance is built into the package for non-Bahraini crew rather than company flats; shared apartments in Juffair or Amwaj are the usual crew choice and rents are moderate by Gulf standards.

Roster & layovers

Roster style

Company rosters over a compact network with around 8-10 days off; heavy on regional Gulf and subcontinent sectors with a smaller share of long-haul trips, making fatigue manageable.

Layovers

Long-haul layovers in London, Paris and Bangkok of 24-48 hours; most other flying is same-day regional turnarounds or short overnight stops around the Gulf and India.

Benefits beyond the paycheck

  • Tax-free salary with housing allowance
  • Staff travel on Gulf Air and interline discount agreements
  • Medical insurance coverage
  • Annual leave tickets
  • Small, familial crew community with the region's most relaxed base lifestyle
  • End-of-service gratuity under Bahraini labour law

Frequently asked questions

How much do Gulf Air cabin crew earn?

Junior crew commonly report total monthly pay of BHD 600-800 (about $1,500-2,100) tax-free including flying and duty allowances plus a housing allowance, with senior crew and pursers earning above BHD 900 (roughly $2,400-3,200).

Is Bahrain a good base for cabin crew?

For lifestyle, yes — it is the most liberal Gulf base, with legal alcohol, moderate living costs, an established expat scene and a compact, friendly island life. The trade-off is that pay and layover variety trail the UAE and Qatari giants.

Is Gulf Air hiring cabin crew in 2026?

In periodic waves rather than continuously. Vacancies open around fleet deliveries and attrition, and the 787 fleet expansion announced in 2025 is expected to drive intermittent intakes — apply promptly when a posting appears on the careers site.
