Gulf Air is the elder statesman of Gulf aviation — founded in 1950 and once the shared flag carrier of four Gulf states before Emirates, Qatar Airways and Etihad went their own ways. Today it is Bahrain's national airline, flying around 35 aircraft (787-9s and A320neo-family jets) from Manama to some 50 destinations across the Gulf, the subcontinent, Asia and Europe, with a service culture that leans on decades of hospitality tradition.

Bahrain is the quiet advantage of this job. The island is the most socially liberal base in the Gulf: alcohol is legal, the causeway to Saudi Arabia brings weekend visitors rather than restrictions, costs are lower than Dubai, and the expat community is long-established. The crew community is small and familial, rosters mix regional hops with a modest long-haul program to London, Paris and Asia, and crew consistently describe colleagues and passengers as the friendliest part of the airline.

The honest downside is money and momentum. Total pay sits well below the big Gulf carriers — competitive against Bahraini living costs but a different league from Emirates or Qatar — and the airline's growth has been cautious for years as Bahrain lacks its neighbours' oil wealth. A 2025 order for more 787s signals ambition, and hiring does happen, but in periodic waves. Gulf Air suits crew who want Gulf flying with a livable, low-drama base and are honest with themselves about the pay gap.
