How to become cabin crew in United Arab Emirates

Living in the UAE is a real advantage. Emirates, flydubai, Etihad and Air Arabia all recruit continuously and hold assessment days in Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi, and Qatar Airways periodically recruits out of Dubai as well. You attend without buying an international flight, you already understand the multicultural service environment recruiters test for, and you can attend repeat events cheaply if the first attempt does not work out.
The complication is your current visa. Cabin crew are employed and sponsored by the airline, so you cannot hold a cabin crew job on a spouse visa, a parent-sponsored residence visa or a competing employer's visa. Your existing employment visa must be cancelled through MOHRE and GDRFA and replaced by the airline's sponsorship, which means resignation notice, any contractual notice period, and a clean cancellation. Candidates who are vague about their current status, or who have an unresolved labour dispute or absconding record, get stopped at the offer stage even after passing every assessment.
The other thing UAE residents underestimate is that being local carries no shortlisting advantage. Emirates and Etihad recruit globally and deliberately build multinational crews; you are assessed against candidates flown in from twenty countries. Familiarity with Dubai will not carry you through the group exercise - preparation will.
What United Arab Emirates employers and recruiters expect
Age
21+ at joining for Emirates and Etihad; 21+ for flydubai; Air Arabia typically 21+. Age at application does not matter if you will be 21 by the joining date.
Education
High school completion (Grade 12) minimum, in any curriculum. Degrees are common among applicants but never required.
Reach / physical
212 cm arm reach on tiptoe for Emirates and Qatar, 210 cm for Etihad; minimum height around 160 cm for most. No tattoos visible in uniform - including wrists, forearms, ankles and the back of the neck. BMI within a healthy range.
Language
Fluent English. Arabic is a genuine differentiator and Emirates and Etihad both actively recruit Arabic speakers; other second languages help on specific routes.
Visa status
Your current UAE visa must be cancellable. Employment visas require a MOHRE work permit cancellation signed by you and your employer, then a GDRFA residence cancellation. No absconding case or unresolved labour ban. The airline becomes your sponsor.
Documents
Passport valid 12+ months, Emirates ID, attested high school certificate (attestation takes time - start early), and a clean police record.

Emirates cabin crew, junior

Air Arabia cabin crew (Sharjah)
AED 5,000 - AED 8,000 per month total
Basic plus sector pay and onboard sales commission. Roughly USD 1,350-2,200 - a lower package than the full-service carriers, but a legitimate way into the industry with a real safety qualification.
The route to a Gulf or international carrier
For UAE residents the Gulf route is a local commute rather than a migration, so use that. Emirates runs open days and invite-only assessment days in Dubai throughout the year; flydubai recruits for its own Dubai base and is a genuinely good entry point for candidates who narrowly miss Emirates; Air Arabia recruits at Sharjah with a lower barrier and a lower package; Etihad assesses in Abu Dhabi. Practical advice specific to residents: do not resign from your current job until you have a signed offer and a joining date, because the cancellation and medical process takes weeks and airline joining dates move. Be prepared to explain your visa position clearly in one sentence at the interview - who sponsors you now, your notice period, and that you can obtain a clean cancellation. If you hold a spouse or parental visa, say so plainly; it is not a disqualifier, but ambiguity is treated as a risk. Emirates requires 21 at joining and a 212 cm arm reach; Etihad measures 210 cm; both require no visible tattoos in uniform.
Your step-by-step plan
- 01Check your own visa situation honestly: who sponsors you, what your notice period is, and whether there is anything - a labour case, an absconding report - that would block a clean cancellation.
- 02Get your high school certificate attested now. Attestation through your home country and the UAE authorities is slow and is a routine cause of delayed joining dates.
- 03Measure your arm reach on tiptoe against a wall and photograph your tattoos against a short-sleeve uniform line so you know exactly where you stand before an assessor tells you.
- 04Apply on emiratesgroupcareers.com, careers.flydubai.com, the Etihad careers site and Air Arabia careers, and attend the assessment days you can reach - being local means you can attend several.
- 05Do not resign until you have a written offer and joining date. Then run the MOHRE work permit cancellation and GDRFA residence cancellation in sequence, and keep every signed document.
- 06Complete the pre-joining medical and expect roughly seven to eight weeks of paid initial training in Dubai or Abu Dhabi before your first line flight.
Avoid these traps
- ⚠UAE law prohibits charging workers recruitment or placement fees, and licensed agencies are explicitly barred from taking placement or processing fees from job seekers. Emirates and Etihad have both publicly warned that they never request an application fee at any stage, and that legitimate correspondence comes only from their own domains. Any request for money is fraud - and reportable.
- ⚠The dominant UAE scam is an unsolicited WhatsApp message from a personal number claiming to represent an airline, offering an interview and then requesting a "visa processing" or "medical" fee of AED 1,000-3,000. Fake recruitment gangs running exactly this have been prosecuted in Dubai. Real airline recruiters do not headhunt cabin crew over WhatsApp.
- ⚠Do not resign from your current job on a verbal assurance or a "conditional selection" email. Airline joining dates shift, and residents who cancelled early have ended up out of status with a limited grace period and no income.
- ⚠Watch out for "cabin crew grooming and interview coaching" packages sold in Dubai at AED 2,000-5,000. Everything they teach - reach measurement, grooming standards, group exercise behaviour - is published free by the airlines themselves, and no coach has any influence over a shortlist.
