Lufthansa Munich base in 2026: the second hub's long haul, the Bavarian crew room

Lufthansa Munich, five years, and I have replied in every Lufthansa thread as the Munich voice and written the works council one. Munich itself, as a base, has the comparison thread from five years ago and not a current one. Here it is.

    The base

Lufthansa's second hub, smaller than Frankfurt, with its own long haul (the A350 fleet is Munich's: Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seoul, Tokyo, Shanghai, Beijing, Delhi, Mumbai, Chicago, Boston, Montreal, Cape Town, São Paulo and more) and a short haul network across Europe. A crew community that is big and not Frankfurt big, with the Bavarian identity that the Frankfurt crew find either charming or exhausting.

    The Munich long haul

The A350 as the Munich aircraft: the modern galleys, the crew rest, the routes that the Frankfurt crew bid for from the bigger list. The Munich seniority list is shorter than Frankfurt's and the long haul comes a little earlier, which Niklas's year three thread would put at year two and a half here. The Asia routes from Munich are the prize and the Munich crew hold them.

    The Bavarian crew room

German with the Bavarian rhythm, the Weisswurst breakfasts the Frankfurt crew mock, the Oktoberfest roster bids, the mountains an hour away for the days off. The foreign crew find the Bavarian German harder than the Frankfurt German and the Bavarian crew room warmer than the Frankfurt one. The crew who are from Bavaria are home. The crew who transferred from Frankfurt are converts or they went back.

The Munich rent against the Tarifvertrag

Munich is the most expensive German city and the Lufthansa Tarifvertrag is the same scale in Frankfurt and Munich. The Munich crew live in the suburbs on the S-Bahn (Freising near the airport, Erding, the northern districts) or they commute from Augsburg and Landshut, and a junior crew member in central Munich does not exist. The same Tarifvertrag buys less in Munich and the mountains are the compensation.

Why the Frankfurt crew transfer south

The A350 and the Asia routes on a shorter list, the Bavarian life, the mountains, the smaller crew room where people know each other, and the Frankfurt exhaustion Niklas and Hannah describe. The transfer is a Tarifvertrag process with the seniority carried, as the old comparison thread said, and the Frankfurt crew who transfer are the ones who wanted a smaller airline inside the big one. Max's Austrian is the next step smaller; Munich is the Lufthansa version.

    The honest Munich

The second hub with the first hub's contract, the A350 long haul earlier, the rent higher, the crew room warmer, the mountains. The Munich crew would not transfer to Frankfurt for anything, which is the sentence every second base on this forum says about its first one. In Munich it is true.

For the Lufthansa applicants with a base choice

Frankfurt for the biggest network and the longest list. Munich for the A350 and the mountains and the rent. The Tarifvertrag is the same. The Tuesday is different.

Frankfurt, and the Munich transfer is the one I think about every winter: the A350 Asia on a shorter list and the mountains. The Frankfurt exhaustion is real and Felix's Munich is the cure the Frankfurt crew prescribe each other. The Weisswurst breakfasts are mocked and secretly envied.

Frankfurt, year three, and the Munich long haul at two and a half years versus my three is the thing I did not know and now cannot unknow. The transfer form exists. The rent paragraph is the thing that stops me.

Frankfurt purser, and the Munich A350 fleet being the modern one is the aircraft argument the Frankfurt pursers accept. The 747 is ours and the A350 is theirs and the pursers argue about which is the better night. Felix's base is a real alternative.

Austrian Vienna, and Felix saying Munich is the smaller airline inside the big one and Austrian is the next step smaller is the Lufthansa Group in three sizes. Vienna on days off remains the compliment. Munich's mountains are a fair rival.

Austrian training, from Graz, and the Munich base being two hours from Graz makes it the Lufthansa base the Austrian crew look at. The same Tarifvertrag that buys less in Munich buys more in Vienna. The group has a geography.

Hamburg, and the Munich base as a choice rather than a Frankfurt consolation is the thing I had wrong. The A350 earlier, the warmer room, the higher rent. The Lufthansa application now has a base preference.

@niklasfra the rent paragraph stops everyone for a year and then the mountains win. The transfer form is in the crew portal and the Munich crew room has a seat for the Frankfurt converts. Erding, not the centre.
