BA Heathrow or Gatwick for new joiners 2026: fleets, destinations, rosters, commute, pay and which base the crew who did both prefer
-
#1 BA Gatwick, six years, Caribbean and Florida, and the Heathrow or Gatwick question comes from every BA applicant who gets the base choice or the base allocation. Nina and Gavin and Jack have written Heathrow; Noah and I have written Gatwick. This is the two side by side, from a Gatwick crew member who did a Heathrow secondment and asked the crew who moved.
The fleets
Heathrow: the whole long haul fleet (the 777s, the 787s, the A350s, the A380s) and the short haul A320 family on the Club Europe and Euro Traveller network. Gatwick: the 777s on the leisure long haul and the A320 family on the short haul leisure routes. Gatwick is a smaller operation with a narrower fleet and a specific network.
The destinations
Heathrow: everywhere BA flies long haul (New York, the US network, the Far East, Africa, South America, the Gulf, India, Australia via Singapore) and the European business network. Gatwick: the Caribbean (Barbados, Antigua, St Lucia, Kingston, Punta Cana), Florida (Orlando, Tampa), Cancun, Las Vegas, and the European leisure routes. If the dream is Tokyo and Cape Town and Buenos Aires, it is Heathrow. If the dream is a week of Caribbean layovers in winter, it is Gatwick.
The rosters
Heathrow: the mixed fleet style rosters with long haul trips of varying lengths and short haul blocks, the bidding by seniority with the long wait for the glamour routes (Gavin's and Nina's threads), the standby. Gatwick: a smaller roster with more predictability because the network is smaller, the long haul trips mostly two to three nights, the short haul leisure days, the summer heavy and the winter long haul heavy. The Gatwick crew describe the roster as more regular; the Heathrow crew describe theirs as more varied.
The commute
Heathrow: west London, the M4 and M25 corridor, Reading, Windsor, the crew who live in the Thames Valley. Gatwick: Sussex and Surrey and the Brighton line (Noah's sea air commute), the crew who live on the coast or in the Sussex towns. Rents are lower around Gatwick than around Heathrow and the quality of life argument for Gatwick is usually the commute and the rent.
The pay
The same contract and the same scales for the same fleet type at both bases in 2026; the difference in take home is in the allowances, which follow the destinations and the trip lengths. The Heathrow long haul crew with the long trips earn more in allowances than the Gatwick crew with the two night Caribbean trips, and the difference is real but not large. Nobody chooses the base for the pay.
Which one the crew who have done both prefer
The ones who moved Gatwick to Heathrow did it for the network and the variety and say the roster is harder and the destinations are worth it. The ones who moved Heathrow to Gatwick did it for the commute, the rent, the regularity and the Caribbean, and say they do not miss the M25. The ones in their twenties without a mortgage tend to prefer Heathrow; the ones with a family in Sussex tend to prefer Gatwick. Neither is the wrong answer.
For the applicants with the choice
The network and the variety: Heathrow. The commute, the regularity and the Caribbean: Gatwick. The pay is the same contract. The life around the base is the real difference and the applicant should choose the life.

#2 Gatwick, two years, Brighton commute, and the life around the base being the real difference is the whole thread in a sentence. The sea air both ends and the Caribbean two nighters are the Gatwick life and the M25 is the Heathrow one. Eleanor has it fairly.
-
#3 Heathrow, ten years, and the Heathrow crew describing the roster as more varied is the kind way of saying harder, and the destinations are worth it for the ones who want them. The Gatwick regularity is real and I have colleagues who moved for it and are happier. Fair comparison.
-
#4 Heathrow purser, and the twenties without a mortgage preferring Heathrow and the family in Sussex preferring Gatwick is the pattern on the crew bus exactly. The pay being the same contract with the allowances following the trips is the correct money line. Pin this for the base allocation season.
-
#5 Heathrow, one year, and the long wait for the glamour routes at Heathrow is the honest Heathrow cost that Eleanor has included: the Tokyo and the Cape Town are years away for the new joiner and the Caribbean at Gatwick is month one. I chose the wait. Not everyone should.
-
#6 London, BA assessment centre next month, career changer, and the base choice was the question I could not answer and this thread answers it for me: the family and the commute say Gatwick, the dream says Heathrow, and the thread says neither is wrong. The life around the base. Thank you Eleanor.
-
#7 Heathrow, three years, and the rents around Gatwick being lower is the thing the London applicants underweight: the Heathrow crew in the Thames Valley pay a lot for the M4. The Gatwick life on the Sussex coast is a different budget. Both bases, both lives, as Eleanor says.

#8 @zainablhr the family and the commute saying Gatwick is a strong answer and the Caribbean in month one is not a consolation prize. @jacklhr choosing the wait with your eyes open is the right way to choose Heathrow and the thread is for the ones who choose it blind.
