British Airways is the largest legacy employer of cabin crew in the UK, with crew concentrated at London Heathrow flying a mixed short-haul and long-haul network to around 200 destinations, and a separate subsidiary, BA Euroflyer, operating short-haul from Gatwick. New joiners at Heathrow enter modern fleet-wide contracts that replaced the old Mixed Fleet arrangements, flying everything from a Paris day trip to a Cape Town layover in the same month, which makes the flying genuinely varied compared to single-fleet European rivals.

Pay is the honest caveat. Starting basic salary is modest by London standards, and while flying pay, in-flight retail commission and layover allowances lift real earnings, new crew commuting into Heathrow on UK take-home pay of roughly GBP 1,700-2,200 a month need to budget carefully. The compensation improves meaningfully with seniority, promotion to Inflight Lead and Inflight Manager roles, and the negotiated pay deals that Unite the Union has secured since 2023 have restored some of the ground lost in the pandemic-era restructuring.

What keeps crew at BA long-term is everything around the salary: heavily discounted staff travel across the oneworld alliance and hundreds of interline partners, a recognisable brand that carries weight anywhere in aviation, and a long-haul network with proper multi-night layovers in cities most low-cost crew never see. Crew culture is unionised, procedural and more formal than at leisure carriers, and Heathrow's scale means you rarely fly with the same colleagues twice.
