United Newark to London on the 767 and 787 in 2026: the transatlantic pattern from the New York side, the Heathrow crew hotel
-
#1 United Newark, eight years, and I wrote the jet lag thread and replied in the route regulars one. The Newark to London pattern is the one the Newark international crew hold for years and the one the new hires bid for first, and it has not been written as the specific pattern it is. Here it is.
The pattern
Newark to Heathrow, several daily on the 767s and the 787s, out in the evening (the 6pm to 10pm departures), seven hours, landing at Heathrow in the morning, a 24 hour layover (sometimes 48 on the pattern that pairs two Londons), back the next morning or afternoon, landing Newark in the afternoon. Three days, one night in London, the five hour swing each way that the body never adjusts to.
The Heathrow crew hotel
The United crews are in the hotels near the airport or in the city depending on the pattern, and the London 24 hours is the Tube into the city or the hotel gym and the sleep, in Paul's and Hiroshi's terms. The crews who hold the London for years have the London routine: the pub in the hotel's village, the Tube to one neighbourhood, the Sunday roast if it is a Sunday, the sleep.
The London 24 hours done right
Land at 7am, the hotel by 9, the short nap to 11, the Tube to Borough Market or the South Bank or one museum, the lunch, the walk, the hotel by 6, the dinner in the hotel's village, the sleep by 9, the 6am alarm for the return. One neighbourhood, one meal, one sleep. The crews who try to do London in 24 hours fly home broken.
The crews who hold it for a decade
The Newark London regulars Josh's thread described: the crew who bid the London every month for years, who have the hotel room that faces away from the road, the pub where the landlord knows them, the Tube route they do not think about. They are the route regulars at their most settled and the London is the Newark version of the Emirates A380 to Heathrow. The new hires who get a London from a dropped line meet them and understand.
The 767 and the 787
The 767 is the older aircraft the Newark London crews love and the new hires find small; the 787 is the newer one with the better crew rest and the quieter cabin. The London pattern is on both and the crews have opinions.
The honest pattern
The London is the Newark international's bread and butter: the shortest long haul, the most familiar city, the five hour swing that is the kindest of the swings, and the pattern the crews hold for years because it is survivable monthly where the Tokyo is not. The jet lag thread's maths apply at the mild end. The regulars are the proof.
For the Newark new hires
Bid the London when the list allows and learn the 24 hours: one neighbourhood, one meal, one sleep. The regulars at the hotel bar will tell you the pub. Then bid it again.

#2 SFO, and the Newark London as the kindest swing against the SFO Tokyo as the worst is the United international in one comparison, and the London regulars at Newark are the settled ones for the reason Jim gives: it is survivable monthly. The Tokyo regulars are the brave ones.
-
#3 BA purser, and the United crews at the Heathrow hotels are the ones the BA crew see at the village pubs on a Tuesday afternoon with the specific look of a crew on a 24 hour, and the regulars know the landlord. Jim's London 24 hours is the one the BA crews do in New York in reverse.
-
#4 LAX, and the London from LAX is the ten hour version with the eight hour swing and the 48 hour layover, and the Newark five hour swing is the thing the LAX crews envy about the East Coast. The kindest long haul in the system is the Newark London. Jim holds it. Fair.
-
#5 Delta JFK, and the Delta JFK London pattern is the same pattern with a different hotel and the same regulars with the same pub. The New York London is the transatlantic bread and butter at both airlines. The 24 hours done right is one neighbourhood. Jim has it.
-
#6 BA Gatwick, and the Gatwick crews fly the reverse to New York on the same pattern and the New York 24 hours done right is also one neighbourhood and one meal. The transatlantic crews on both ends have the same rule. The city is for the next time.
-
#7 Denver, and the London from Denver I picked up at month nineteen was my first and I did London in 24 hours and flew home broken, exactly as Jim warns. The next one will be one neighbourhood. The regulars at the hotel told me the pub and I was too tired to go.

#8 @benjireserve the first London done in 24 hours and the broken flight home is the initiation. The second one is the pub. The tenth one is the room that faces away from the road. Bid it again.
