Scoot cabin crew from Singapore: the SIA group low cost carrier, the 787 medium haul, the pay versus SIA and whether it is a route into the mainline

SIA, and the Singapore threads on here are all SIA mainline. Scoot is the SIA group's low cost carrier and half the Singaporean applicants who do not get the SIA walk in apply there, and nobody has written it. Here it is from the SIA side with what the Scoot crew tell us.

    The airline

Scoot, the SIA group's low cost long and medium haul carrier, Changi based, 787s and A320 family and the Embraers for the regional, a network across Southeast Asia, Australia, India, China, Japan, Korea and a few long haul (Athens, Berlin). The SIA group's answer to AirAsia and Jetstar.

    Recruitment

Singaporeans and PRs, and Malaysians and other regional nationals with the work pass, in rounds that are more frequent than the SIA walk ins and with a shorter process: an application, an interview day, the medical, the training. The height and the grooming standards are the SIA group's with a slightly more relaxed uniform (the Scoot uniform is the yellow, not the kebaya) and a younger crew culture.

    The pay versus SIA

Below SIA on the basic and the allowances, with the low cost structure (flying hours, sector allowances, the buy on board commission). A Scoot crew member earns less than an SIA Flight Stewardess at the same years and more than a Jetstar Asia one. The housing allowance is smaller. The Malaysian and regional crew at Scoot have the same housing problem as at SIA with less money for it.

    The flying

The 787 medium haul to Australia and Japan and India (six to eight hour sectors with a layover), the A320 regional turnarounds, and the long haul to Europe for the senior crew. A low cost service: buy on board, the Scoot specific product, a cabin of 375 on the 787 with a crew ratio that is the low cost one. The Australia routes are the Scoot crew's favourites for the layovers.

Is it a route into SIA

Not formally. The group does not have a flow through. In practice, Scoot crew apply to the SIA walk in like everyone and the Scoot experience is respected: the Scoot crew arrive knowing Changi, the regulator and the group culture, and the SIA recruiters know it. Several of my colleagues came from Scoot. The reverse (SIA to Scoot) is rare.

    The honest comparison

SIA: the kebaya, the audits, the slow promotion, the name, the pension of a long career. Scoot: the yellow, the low cost pace, the faster hiring, the younger crew room, the lower pay, the Australia layovers. The Singaporean applicants who want SIA and do not get it do Scoot for two years and walk in again. The ones who want the low cost life stay and become seniors fast.

    For Singaporean and regional applicants

Apply to both. Take Scoot if it comes first. Walk in to SIA with the Scoot hours and the group culture already learned. It is the Singapore version of every regional low cost door on this forum.

SIA, and the Scoot to SIA walk in with the group culture learned is the path I have seen work several times. Not formal, respected. Evelyn has the Singapore door right.

SIA, Malaysian, and my cousin is at Scoot and the housing problem with less money for it is exactly her complaint. The Australia layovers are her reward. Scoot is a real job and a door, as Evelyn says.

Filipino at a regional carrier, and Scoot recruits Filipinos for the Manila routes and the crew who go describe the yellow uniform and the younger crew room as the Scoot identity. The SIA group with the tie off.

Jetstar Sydney, and Scoot is our Singapore sibling: the same model, the same 787 medium haul, the same Australia and Bali routes from the other end. The Scoot and Jetstar crews meet at the Gold Coast hotel. Evelyn's description is ours from the north.

Jakarta, SIA walk in done, and Scoot is my plan B with the Jakarta routes. Two years, then the walk in again with the group culture. The Singapore version of the regional door, exactly.

IndiGo Bangalore, and Scoot flies to Bangalore and recruits Indians for it occasionally. The Indian applicants know Scoot as the SIA group door with a lower bar. Evelyn's thread confirms the shape.

@sunnysyd23 the Scoot and Jetstar crews at the Gold Coast hotel comparing the yellow and the orange is the low cost Asia Pacific in one image. Both are doors. Both are jobs.
