Applying from Kenya and East Africa in 2026: Kenya Airways, the Gulf events in Nairobi, the documents that take months and the English the recruiters hear
-
#1 Nairobi, applying, and the East African picture on this forum is one Kenya Airways thread and a line in the Ethiopian one. Here is the applicant's version from Kenya, compiled from the applicant groups, the Kenya Airways crew I know and the Gulf event I attended in Nairobi in August.
Kenya Airways
The national carrier, Nairobi based, 787s and 737s and Embraers, a network across Africa, to Europe (London, Paris, Amsterdam), the Gulf, India and China. Recruits Kenyan nationals in rounds, with English and Swahili, a diploma or degree, the reach, the medical and the swimming. The rounds are irregular and follow the airline's financial situation, which has been difficult. The pay in shillings is modest with the layover allowances in hard currency on the Europe and Gulf routes as the real income. KQ experience is respected at the Gulf events and a share of KQ crew leave for them.
The Gulf events in Nairobi
Emirates and Qatar hold events in Nairobi regularly and Etihad occasionally. The August Emirates event had around 350 in the queue, a large share with hospitality and the Nairobi hotel industry behind them, and the structure the assessment threads describe. The first cut was heavy, as everywhere. The Kenyan applicants' strength is English (Kenyan English is clear and the recruiters say so) and service; the weakness is the documents and the photo.
The documents that take months
The police clearance (the certificate of good conduct from the DCI) takes weeks to months and must be started before the event, not after the call. The passport renewal through the immigration department can take longer than the police clearance. The degree certification for the apostille goes through the ministry and the Kenyan apostille process is slow. Every Kenyan applicant who got a call and missed a joining date missed it on documents. Start all three before you queue.
The photo
The Nairobi studio photo with the backdrop and the retouching is the Kenyan version of the problem every regional thread describes. Plain, unedited, meets the spec. The desk sent people away for it in August.
The family question
Asked to every Kenyan, as everywhere, and the answer with a plan (the Nairobi flight is daily from Dubai and Doha, five hours, staff travel) is the one that works.
The East African community in the Gulf
Large and growing, with Kenyan, Ugandan, Tanzanian and Ethiopian crew across the Gulf carriers, and a Nairobi route from every Gulf hub. The crew who are there say the community found them within a week.
For East African applicants
Start the documents today. Plain photo. English as you speak it. A real family plan. And Kenya Airways as the home option if the round opens, because the hours and the Europe routes make the Gulf event easier later.

#2 Ghana, and the documents taking months is the West African story too: the police clearance and the passport are the two that cost people joining dates. Melissa's 'start all three before you queue' is the African applicant's first rule.
-
#3 Emirates purser, from Nairobi, and the Kenyan crew in Dubai are one of the fastest growing groups and the Nairobi route is daily. The community will find you. The documents will not do themselves. Both true.
-
#4 Accra, aspiring, and the East African picture is the West African one with different capitals. The Ethiopian academy route Kwame wrote about and the Gulf events are the two doors for all of us.
-
#5 Nigeria, and the Nairobi hotel industry producing strong service candidates is the thing the Gulf recruiters say about Kenya at the Lagos events too. The English and the service are the Kenyan advantage.
-
#6 Sudanese at Qatar, and the East African crew in Doha are a close group with the Nairobi and Addis routes as the commute. Melissa's family plan answer is exactly what the Doha recruiters want to hear.
-
#7 Recruiter, and the Nairobi events are among the strongest on the English and the weakest on the documents and the photo. Melissa has diagnosed it from the queue. Fix the two and the Kenyan candidates fly.
