Got the Emirates call from the Mumbai open day on day 51: the Indian applicant's after, police clearance, apostille, bank and family

I wrote up the Mumbai open day in the assessment section and said I was in week seven of waiting. Day 51, a Dubai number, 2:15 in the afternoon while I was at the hotel front desk. I took the call in the staff corridor. So here is the after, specifically for Indian applicants, because the Casablanca thread covers the Moroccan version and the Indian paperwork is its own thing.

The call

Seven minutes. My name, my date of birth, that I had been successful, the joining date window three months out, the email to follow. I said yes to everything and asked no questions. The email came in 40 minutes with the offer, the portal and the document list.

The Indian document list

1. The police clearance certificate from the Passport Seva Kendra. This is the slow one. Apply online, book the appointment, attend with the documents, and the certificate comes in two to six weeks depending on the police verification at your address. Start it the day of the call, or before if you are confident.
2. The apostille of the education certificates through the Ministry of External Affairs, via an authorised agent. Two to three weeks and a fee. Only the highest qualification is needed but check the portal.
3. The medical questionnaire, then the medical at a designated clinic in Mumbai. Blood, X-ray, eyes, ears, general. Results in about ten days.
4. Passport with the validity and the pages. Mine was fine; several people in my group had to renew, which added a month.
5. Photos in the joining format, different from the open day ones.

The bank

Open an account with a bank that has an international presence or a Dubai partner before you leave, and carry some dollars in cash for the first weeks. The first salary comes at the end of month one. The Egyptian and Moroccan threads say the same and it is true for India: the first month in Dubai costs more than you think.

The family arrangements

This is the part I want to write about, because for Indian families it is the whole thing. My parents had said yes at the open day stage in principle. The call made it real and there was a difficult week. What settled it: the flight prices to Mumbai on staff travel, the accommodation description (my mother wanted to know about the security desk and was reassured by it), the salary in rupees, and my cousin who is at Qatar calling my father. The recruiter's family question was right: the families who have discussed it properly are the ones whose daughters stay.

Now

Six weeks to the joining date. Police clearance received on day 24 after the call. Apostille done. Medical cleared. Visa in process. Flight booking appeared on the portal yesterday and I looked at it for a long time.

For the Mumbai day 40 people
