The Cathay Pacific offer after the panel: the timeline to the training date, the medical, the visa for foreign hires and what the offer letter contains

The golden call threads are Gulf shaped, which is fair, but the Asian carriers have their own version and the Cathay one is different enough to write up. Here is the offer process at Cathay from the panel interview to the first day of training, for the applicants in the Cathay assessment threads.

    After the panel

No golden call in the Gulf sense. An email, usually within two to four weeks of the panel, saying you have been successful subject to the medical and the references, with a link to the onboarding portal. Some candidates in my round heard in ten days; one heard in six weeks. Batching, as everywhere.

    The medical

At a designated clinic in Hong Kong for local hires, or arranged in the home country for foreign hires. The standard aviation medical: vision, hearing, general, blood tests, a chest X-ray. Results in a week or two. The medical is the stage that removes a small number of people and they are told why.

    The references and the background

Cathay checks employment history and asks for references, and the check is real. Gaps are asked about. A criminal record check is part of it for the airport pass.

    The offer letter

The grade, the basic, the flying pay rate, the allowance structure, the housing arrangement (for foreign hires), the training bond (Cathay has one and the period and the amount are in the letter), the probation period, the uniform and grooming obligations, and the training start date or window. Read the bond and the probation sections twice.

    The visa for foreign hires

The company sponsors the Hong Kong employment visa and handles the application. The applicant provides documents (passport, certificates, the police clearance from home). The visa takes several weeks and the training date is set after it is approved. Foreign hires in my round waited two to three months from the offer to the visa.

    Training date

Local hires typically start within one to two months of the offer. Foreign hires after the visa. Training is around eight weeks at Cathay City with the accommodation arrangement for foreign hires during it.

    Total timeline

For me, a local hire: assessment day to panel two weeks, panel to offer email three weeks, offer to medical one week, medical to training date six weeks. About three months. For foreign hires in my batch: five to six months from assessment to training because of the visa.

The honest difference from the Gulf

Quieter. No dramatic call, an email and a portal. A bond and a probation that are real. A visa process for foreigners that is efficient but not fast. And a training start that is close for locals and distant for foreigners. The Gulf applicants who cross over find it undramatic. That is the Cathay way.

Cathay, a year ahead, and my timeline was almost identical: three months as a local hire. The bond section of the offer letter is the one people skip and should not. It is enforced.

Vietnamese, applying to Cathay and SIA, and the five to six months for foreign hires is the realistic number I needed. Planning the current job's notice around it now.

Qatar, joining in five weeks, and reading the Cathay version is interesting: same steps, no call, more paperwork before the training. The Gulf call is theatre. The Cathay email is the same news.

@sara2000 theatre is the right word and I am slightly jealous of it. The email was exciting for about four minutes.
