Cathay Pacific cabin crew salary and housing in Hong Kong 2026: the rebuilt pay scale, the housing allowance and how crew actually live on it

Cathay, five years, and the Cathay salary thread on here is from before the rebuild. Here is the current picture: what the pay scale looks like after the changes, what the housing situation is, and how the crew I know actually live in Hong Kong on a cabin crew salary.

The pay scale after the rebuild

Cathay reset its cabin crew contracts during the hard years and the new joiners since are on a scale that is lower than the old one in basic and more dependent on flying hours. A basic in Hong Kong dollars, an hourly flying pay that is the main variable, allowances per hour away on layovers in the destination currency, and a thirteenth month at some grades. The union (the FAU) has been negotiating improvements as the airline recovered and there have been increases. The scale is not public in the way the European agreements are; ask a current crew member privately for the last three months net.

Housing

No company housing for local crew. A housing allowance exists for some categories and it does not cover Hong Kong rent for a solo flat. The reality: new joiners live at home with parents if they are from Hong Kong (very common and not a stigma), or share flats in Tung Chung (near the airport, newer, cheaper by Hong Kong standards) or in the New Territories. Foreign hires have a housing arrangement at the start and then the same problem. A room in a shared flat in Tung Chung is a large share of a new joiner's net.

How crew actually live

At home, if they can. In shared flats near the airport, if they cannot. They eat at the cha chaan tengs and the airport staff canteens. They use the layover allowances to save because the layover is the one place the Hong Kong cost of living does not apply. Senior crew with the higher scale and the long haul hours live well. New joiners live carefully.

The layover allowance effect

Because Hong Kong is so expensive and the layover allowances are paid per hour away in the local currency, a month heavy with long haul (London, New York, Sydney, Vancouver) is a month where the allowances are a large share of the income and where the crew are eating well in cities cheaper than home. The crew bid long haul for the allowances as much as for the destinations.

The honest comparison

Cathay pays less than the Gulf in absolute terms, provides no housing, and Hong Kong costs more than Dubai. The Gulf carriers win on money. Cathay wins on the product, the training, the union, the young seniority list and the promotion speed, and on Hong Kong itself if it is home. Crew from Hong Kong mostly stay. Crew from elsewhere weigh it every year.

If you are from Hong Kong: it is the job, and living at home for the first years is how it works. If you are from elsewhere: know the rent before the assessment, ask for the current scale from a current crew member, and go in for the airline and the promotion, not the money.
