Qatar Airways from Bangkok and Thailand: the Bangkok events, the Thai community in Doha and the service culture overlap

#1 Thai, Qatar, four years, business class, and the Thai applicants who find me ask the same three things: how the Bangkok events work, what Doha is like for Thais, and whether Thai service training transfers. Here are all three.
The Bangkok events
Qatar holds open days in Bangkok several times a year and occasionally in Chiang Mai. Large, 250 to 350. The Thai queue has a lot of hospitality experience (hotels, resorts, spas, the airlines) and the recruiters know it, so the standard expected from Thai candidates on service questions is high. Where Thai candidates lose: the English test and the spoken English. Thai school English is not enough; the candidates who pass have worked in international hotels or studied abroad or simply used English daily. The reach test at 212 also catches more Thai women than European because of average height. Check both before you queue.
The Thai community in Doha
Small compared to the Filipino or Indian communities but close. Thai restaurants exist and are good. The Thai crew have a group, a temple visit at the festivals, and a habit of cooking together in the accommodation on days off. Bangkok is six hours from Doha with daily flights, so going home two or three times a year is normal on staff travel.
Does Thai service training transfer
Yes, more than almost any other background. Thai hospitality is built on anticipation and warmth without intrusion, and that is exactly the business class standard at Qatar. The Thai crew are disproportionately in business and first for that reason. What does not transfer: the Thai habit of indirectness with a difficult passenger. Qatar wants warm and firm, and firm took me a year to learn. Also the wine knowledge, which nobody from Thailand has and the course provides.
Grooming
Thai candidates are generally strong on grooming and presentation, and the Qatar standard is not a shock. The specifics (the red, the bun, the nails) are given in training.
The honest comparison with Thai Airways
Thai Airways is the home option and it recruits Thai nationals with a strong preference for Thai speakers, a lower pay scale in baht, and Bangkok as home. Qatar is three to four times the money, Doha as home, and the distance. Most Thai crew I know did a few years at home first or went straight to the Gulf at 21 with hotel experience. Both work. The Gulf money is the reason most of us are here, and the service overlap is the reason we do well once we arrive.

#3 Vietnamese, applying, and the reach and English points apply to us the same way. Vietnamese school English is the barrier, not the service. Six months of daily English before the event.

#4 SIA, and the Thai crew who came to us from hotels are the same story. The Asian hospitality background is the strongest preparation for a premium cabin that exists, and the English is where it is decided.
