Qatar Airways cabin crew probation explained: the six months, the appraisals, the things that end contracts early and how to pass quietly

Jordanian, Qatar, economy purser, and every new joiner asks about probation in the first week because the training centre mentions it and then nobody explains it. Here is what it is, what actually ends contracts in probation, and how to get through it without drama.

    What probation is

The first six months on the line. The company can end the contract with short notice during it. After it, you are a confirmed employee with the notice period and the process that implies. The first six months are also when you are learning the operation, so the two things overlap: you are most likely to make mistakes exactly when mistakes count most.

    The appraisals

Every flight the senior crew (the cabin senior, the purser) can submit feedback on new joiners. There is a formal probation review at three months and at six. The reviews collect the flight feedback, the attendance record, any customer feedback and any grooming or uniform notes. A clean probation is a set of reviews with nothing in them.

What actually ends contracts in probation

From what I have seen in seven years:

    1. Attendance. Sick calls and lates in probation are counted and a pattern (three or four in six months) triggers a conversation that can end the contract. This is the most common one and the most avoidable.
    2. A serious grooming or uniform failure repeated after a warning. Rare, but it happens.
    3. A passenger complaint with substance, especially about attitude. One is a note. Two is a problem.
    4. Failing a recurrent check or a line assessment. Rare in probation because the training was recent.
    5. Accommodation rule breaches. Guests, curfew in the early period, a party. The accommodation team reports to HR and HR does not distinguish between the cabin and the building.

Nobody in my time has lost a probation for being slow in the galley or nervous on the PA. Those are trained out.

    How to pass quietly

Be early to every sign on, by 15 minutes. Do not call sick unless you genuinely cannot fly; if you do, do it correctly and with the doctor's note. Groom exactly to the manual for six months; you can relax to the tolerated version after. Say good morning to every senior by name. Ask questions in the galley, not in front of passengers. Do not go to the accommodation parties. And after every flight, ask the senior if there is anything you should work on. They will remember that you asked and they will write it down.

    The other side of probation

After six months, the notice period protects you, the accommodation rules relax, the housing allowance option appears at some point, and the pursers stop watching you as a new joiner. It goes fast. Most people pass. The ones who do not almost always saw it coming in the attendance record.

Two years in and my probation was exactly this. The 'ask the senior after every flight' habit is the one thing I did that the pursers mentioned in my six month review. It takes ten seconds and it is worth a year.

UK, Qatar, and the accommodation point deserves emphasis. A girl in my batch lost her contract in month four for a guest in the building, not for anything on the aircraft. HR does not separate the two.

Arriving in five weeks and this is now printed. Early by fifteen, exact grooming, no parties, ask after every flight. Six months and then breathe.

@sara2000 and enjoy it as well. Probation is also the six months when everything is new and every layover is the first one. The rules do not stop that.
