Cathay has been recruiting heavily since the rebuild and the events are different from the pre 2020 ones that older threads describe, so here is the current format from someone who did it and now flies.

    Who they are hiring

Hong Kong residents mostly, plus a growing number from the Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, Taiwan, Korea and Japan for the language routes. The Hong Kong base is the only base. Foreign hires need the work visa, which the company handles, and need to be prepared to live in one of the most expensive cities on earth on a starting salary. That last part is the real filter.

    The online stage

Application, then a video interview, recorded, three questions. Standard. Then an invitation to the assessment at Cathay City near the airport.

    The assessment day

Smaller than the Gulf events, 40 to 60 people per session. Registration and height check (there is a reach test, around 208cm). A group discussion in English with about eight people on a service scenario. Then an English test that is a real test, not a formality, and if you are applying for a language route, a language interview with a native speaker.

The Cantonese question: you do not need Cantonese to be hired. You do need it to live well in Hong Kong and to be fully useful on the regional routes. Non Cantonese crew are common now. Mandarin is a real advantage for the mainland routes.

    The final round

A panel interview, two people, about 30 minutes. Competency questions plus a lot about resilience. They were direct about the last few years and asked how I would feel joining an airline that had been through what Cathay went through. They want people who are joining for the airline as it is now, not for a memory of it.

    After

Medical, then an offer, then training which is around eight weeks and thorough. From the assessment to the first flight was about five months for me.

    Honest view

Cathay is a good airline to work for again. The service standard is high, the training is excellent, the fleet is modern, and the network is back. The pay for a new joiner in Hong Kong is tight. The seniority list is young after the rebuild, which means promotion comes faster than at almost any legacy carrier right now. If you can handle the rent, it is one of the better bets in Asia.

Hong Kong, different carrier, and the rent point cannot be overstated. Cathay new joiners share flats in Tung Chung and still spend half the salary. It is the job people want and the city people cannot afford. Both true.

Cathay too, joined a year before Leon. The 'joining for the airline as it is now' framing is exactly what they asked me. If you talk about the glory days of the 747 upper deck they will politely move on.

SIA, and the young seniority list at Cathay is the thing our crew talk about. Promotion in three years there versus seven here. Different trade offs, both real.

Vietnamese, applying to both SIA and Cathay, and the Mandarin advantage point is one I had not read anywhere. Thank you.
