Cathay Pacific from Hong Kong in 2026: the rebuilt operation, the hiring, the flat and the rent, and what the crew room says now
-
#1 Hong Kong, Cathay, and Cathay had a hard few years that the internet remembers and a rebuild that the internet has not caught up with. Here is the operation now, from the crew room.
The rebuild
The airline shrank hard in the pandemic years, lost a lot of crew, and has been hiring steadily since to rebuild the operation to the network it had. That has meant large intakes, a younger crew base than before, and a training pipeline running constantly. It has also meant a crew room with a memory of the hard years and a new generation without it, which is a specific dynamic.
The hiring
Open to Hong Kong residents and, through specific schemes, to mainland Chinese and some other nationalities for language routes. The requirements are the standard ones with a 208 reach and Cantonese or Mandarin as a strong advantage. The assessment is a group day and interviews in Hong Kong. Batches are regular and the timeline is faster than it was.
The flat and the rent
Hong Kong rent is the problem, as everyone knows. Crew live in Tung Chung near the airport, in flat shares, or with family, and a first year salary in a Tung Chung flat share is tight and livable. There is a housing allowance component and it does not cover Hong Kong. The crew who save are the ones with family accommodation. That is the honest picture.
The flying
Everything. Cathay's network is Asia, Europe, North America, Australia, the Middle East and Africa, with the A350s, the 777s and the A321neos for regional. Long haul with real layovers and the same long haul body cost as everywhere. Regional turns to the mainland and Southeast Asia. A roster that is the legacy long haul roster with Asian layovers.
The tattoo policy
Since someone corrected it in the feedback board: tattoos covered by the uniform are accepted, visible ones on the hands, neck and face are not. That is the policy now and it is applied.
What the crew room says now
That the operation is back. That the pay has improved from the low point and is not what it was in the old days. That the young crew base is energetic and the senior crew are tired. That Hong Kong is still Hong Kong: dense, expensive, the best food, the small flats, the done every walk in two years problem that Evelyn described for Singapore. And that the flying is worth it, mostly, for the people who wanted the world from an Asian base.
For applicants
If you are a Hong Kong resident with the languages, it is a real career at a real airline that is rebuilding and promoting fast because it needs to. If you are not, the schemes are narrow. Check them.
Questions from the region and from the curious welcome.

#2 Also Hong Kong, also Cathay, and the 'memory of the hard years versus the new generation without it' is the crew room dynamic exactly. The young ones have energy. The old ones have stories. The operation is better for having both.

#3 British in Hong Kong, at Cathay through one of the schemes, and the schemes are narrow and Jasmine is right to say so. But the flying from a Hong Kong base is the best in Asia and the rebuild means the promotion is real. I am glad I came.

#4 SIA, and the Cathay versus SIA comparison is a constant in the Asian crew groups, and the answer is: similar flying, similar rent problem, different city, and Cathay is rebuilding while SIA is steady. Both are real. Choose the city.

#6 Vietnamese, applying in the region, and the Cathay schemes are the thing I need to check for my nationality. Thank you for saying they are narrow rather than letting me find out at an assessment.

#7 JAL, and the Cathay crews in the Tokyo terminal are visibly younger than three years ago and visibly energetic, which matches Jasmine's rebuild description. Good to see the operation back. Asia is better with a strong Cathay.
