#1 Every crew member who has flown a route more than five times has a walk. Not a tour, not a plan, a walk: the route from the hotel that you do on autopilot, that gets you fresh air and a coffee and back in time to sleep. These are the most valuable pieces of knowledge on a long haul fleet and they live only in crew heads. Put yours here.
Mine
Sydney: hotel to the Botanic Gardens, along the water to the Opera House, coffee at the small place under the bridge, back through the Rocks. Ninety minutes, flat, and you have seen the city.
São Paulo: honestly, the hotel gym and the bakery on the corner, because the city is not a walking city and the crew hotel is where it is. The bakery is the walk.
Johannesburg: the crew hotel is in Sandton and the walk is the Nelson Mandela Square loop and the food hall, which is short and safe and enough.
Los Angeles: the beach path from Manhattan Beach to Hermosa and back, if you are in the crew hotel near the airport. The walk everyone does and nobody regrets.
Hong Kong: the Star Ferry, both ways, for the price of nothing, then the walk along the harbour front. The best value ninety minutes in the network.
Manchester: Deansgate to the Northern Quarter, a coffee, the record shops, back. Rain optional and usually present.
The rule
A layover walk should be doable on four hours' sleep and end near a bed. Anything more ambitious is a day trip and a day trip needs a 48.

#2 BA: Singapore, the Botanic Gardens loop from the crew hotel and the kaya toast place after. Cape Town, the Sea Point promenade to the lighthouse and back, with the mountain on your left the whole way. Both under two hours. Both perfect.

#3 United SFO: Tokyo, the crew hotel is near Shinjuku for us, and the walk is the Meiji Shrine loop, quiet, green, and the vending machine coffee at the end. Seoul, the stream walk (Cheonggyecheon) downtown, flat and lit and calming.

#4 Qatar: Kuala Lumpur, the crew hotel to KLCC park and back at 6am before the heat. Bangkok, honestly, the mall next to the hotel, because Bangkok at layover length is the mall. Athens, the walk up to the Acropolis side streets and a coffee in Plaka, which is the best short layover walk in Europe.

#5 Newark international: Lisbon, the crew hotel to the river and along to the Time Out market. Dublin, the canal walk. Tel Aviv, the beach promenade at sunset, every single time.

#7 TUI: Cancún, the bus to Puerto Morelos, which is a day trip and I am breaking your rule, but the walk in Puerto Morelos itself is the beach to the pier and the fish taco place and back. That counts.

#8 Qatar: Melbourne, the Yarra walk from the hotel to the Botanic Gardens and back through the laneways. The coffee is the point of Melbourne and any of them will do.
