From my notebook, tested a dozen times:

Day 1: land, hotel, 90-minute sleep max. Late afternoon: Wat Pho and the river at sunset, dinner in Chinatown (Yaowarat), early night.
Day 2: morning street food breakfast, a two-hour massage (ask crew hotel for the reputable one), Chatuchak if weekend, rooftop for one drink at sunset, sleep early for the pickup.

Rule: one big activity per day. The crew who try to do everything fly home destroyed.

The 90-minute cap on the arrival sleep is the key. Longer and you lose the whole first evening to grogginess.

Bangkok is a short hop for us, but I still use the "one big activity per day" rule everywhere.
