Cabin crew without citizenship: Gulf carriers that hire any passport, European carriers that need the right to work, US and Canada residency, refugee documents
-
#1 Qatar, Sudanese, three years, and the right to work question appears in every regional thread as a line ('no visa sponsorship at the US carriers', 'EU right to work for Lufthansa'). The applicants with a complicated passport situation (the residents without citizenship, the dual status, the refugees with travel documents, the stateless) have no thread and they message the ones of us with the unusual passports. Here is the picture.
The Gulf carriers: any nationality with a passport
Emirates, Qatar, Etihad and the others hire any nationality and sponsor the residence visa themselves, which is why the Gulf cabins are 150 nationalities. The requirement is a passport that the destination countries will accept for crew entry (the GD arrangements Leon described) and the airline's visa department knows which passports are a problem for which routes and rosters around it. A Sudanese passport, a Pakistani passport, an Iraqi passport: hired, rostered with the passport in mind. The Gulf is the door for the passport the European carriers cannot use.
The European carriers: the right to work
Lufthansa, Air France, BA, KLM, the Scandinavians, the low cost carriers: the right to work in the country (citizenship, EU citizenship, a residence permit with work rights, the UK settled status). No visa sponsorship for cabin crew at almost all of them. The resident without citizenship with a work permit is hired (the Brazilian with the Portuguese residence at TAP, the Turkish German with the German residence at Lufthansa). The one without the permit is not, whatever the English.
The US and Canada: residency
The US majors: citizenship or the green card or a work authorisation; no sponsorship. Canada: citizenship or permanent residence; no sponsorship (every Canadian thread). The resident with the authorisation is hired. The applicant abroad without it is not, and the Gulf is the door for them.
The Asian carriers
SIA, Cathay, the Japanese and Korean carriers sponsor the work pass for the foreign hires they recruit (the regional sessions, the language routes) and the pass is the airline's to arrange. The resident of Singapore or Hong Kong without citizenship is hired on the pass. The passport that the airline's routes cannot use is the problem, as at the Gulf.
The stateless and refugee applicants
The ones nobody writes about: the applicants with a refugee travel document or a stateless person's document instead of a passport. The Gulf carriers' visa departments have handled them case by case and some have been hired, with the document accepted for the residence visa and the roster built around the destinations that accept the document (fewer). The European carriers with the right to work for refugees with status have hired them on the national document. The US carriers with the refugee's work authorisation have too. It is harder at every airline and it has been done at most, and the applicant with the document should ask the airline's HR directly and in writing before the event, because the desk will not know.
The honest map for the complicated passport
The Gulf carriers for the nationality the West cannot hire. The European, US and Canadian carriers for the resident with the work right. The Asian carriers for the regional hire with the pass. And the direct written question to HR for the document that is not a passport, because the answer exists and the desk does not have it.
For the applicants with the complicated passport
The Gulf is the door most of the time. The residence permit is the door in the West. The written question is the door for the document. And the ones of us with the unusual passports are on this forum and flying.

#2 Georgian Airways, and the Georgian passport at the Gulf carriers is rostered around the destinations that need a visa for it, exactly as Ibrahim describes, and my cousin at Emirates has the roster built that way. The Gulf hires the passport the West cannot. The thread the complicated passports needed.
-
#3 PIA, and the Pakistani passport at the Gulf carriers with the roster built around it is the Pakistani crew's experience: hired, rostered, the visa department knowing the routes. The Gulf is the door for us and Ibrahim has said why. The European carriers are not, whatever the English.
-
#4 Brazilian at TAP on the Portuguese residence, and the resident without citizenship with the work permit being hired in Europe is my case exactly and the one without the permit not being hired is my cousin's. The permit is the door in the West. Ibrahim has the map.
-
#5 Karachi, applying to the Gulf, and the Gulf as the door for the Pakistani passport is the reason the Karachi applicants do not look at Europe and Ibrahim has explained it without the embarrassment the applicants feel about it. The passport is the passport. The Gulf hires it.
-
#6 MEA Beirut, and the Lebanese passport at the Gulf carriers is rostered around the destinations too and the Lebanese at Emirates and Etihad describe the visa department's work. The small country passports and the Gulf's visa department is a thread of its own and Ibrahim has started it.

#7 Recruiter, and the refugee travel document at the Gulf events is a case I have had twice and the answer both times was the written question to the airline's HR before the event, as Ibrahim says, because the desk did not have it and HR did. One was hired. The written question is the door.

#8 @charlottecpt one hired of two with the document is the honest ratio and the written question before the event is the method. @aminakhi the embarrassment the Karachi applicants feel about the passport is misplaced: the Gulf built its cabins on the passports the West would not hire and the cabins are the better for it.
