Emirates open day Johannesburg 2026 from the recruiter's side: the 300 in the car park, the first cut and the three mistakes that cost the rest

Recruiter, Cape Town, and I run the Johannesburg events for one of the Gulf carriers' consultancies and the Johannesburg threads on this forum are from the candidates (Sophie, Marcus, Gulfbound). The recruiter's side of a Johannesburg day, because the South African applicants are the best prepared on the continent and still lose half at the first cut.

    The car park

The hotel in Sandton or near the airport, 300 in the queue by 7am (Sophie's thread had 250), the car park full and the queue around the building, the candidates in business dress in the Highveld morning cold. The assessors arrive at 6:30 and see the queue from the car and the queue is already being assessed: the ones who are organising it, the ones who are helping the nervous ones, the ones who are on their phones.

The desk and the first cut

The document check (the ID, the passport, the matric, the photo) and the first look. The photo problem is smaller in Johannesburg than in Lagos or Kochi, because the South African candidates have read this forum and the plain wall is common. The passport validity is the South African problem (the Home Affairs renewal queues) and the desk sends people away for it. Then the presentation and the first cut by number: half go home, as everywhere, on the CV and the desk's look and the airline's need for the day.

    The South African candidates' strength

The English, which is clear and confident. The hospitality, from the restaurant and the hotel and the game lodge industries, which produce service stories with numbers. The diversity of the room, which the Gulf carriers want for the African routes. And the preparation: the Johannesburg candidates have read the threads and the STAR stories are ready and the family answer has the Johannesburg flight in it.

The three mistakes that cost the rest

One: the group exercise dominance. The South African candidates are confident and the confident ones take over the table and the sheet marks them down, as every group exercise thread says. Two: the hero story in the final interview. The game lodge story where the candidate saved the guest from the elephant is told with pride and the sheet wants the escalation (Gavin's rule breaking thread). Three: the family answer that is the history and not the plan: 'South Africans are used to working abroad' instead of 'the Johannesburg flight is daily and my mother has the staff travel dates'.

    The final interviews

About 60 of 300 reach them, the afternoon and the next morning, and the South African candidates in the final are strong and the calls go to roughly a third of them, which is the Johannesburg ratio and it is a good one.

    For the Johannesburg applicants

The passport renewed, the plain wall, the group exercise with the two useful things and not the leadership, the escalation in the story and not the elephant, and the family plan with the flight. The Johannesburg room is the best prepared in Africa and the three mistakes are the ones that separate the 60 from the 20.

Durban, and I was in the Johannesburg car park last month and I organised the queue because the threads said the assessors watch, and I was at the final interview and the elephant story was not told. Day 19 and waiting. Charlotte's three mistakes were the three I avoided because of the forum.

Emirates from Cape Town, and the Johannesburg day Charlotte describes from the desk is the one I described from the queue and the ratio (60 of 300 to the final, a third called) matches my year. The South African candidates are prepared and confident and the confidence is the group exercise's trap. Fair from the desk.

Emirates from Joburg, and the game lodge elephant story is a real genre at the Johannesburg finals and I nearly told mine. The escalation version got me through. Charlotte has named the South African hero story and the applicants should retire the elephant.

FlySafair Johannesburg, and the Home Affairs passport renewal queue as the South African desk problem is the thing the Johannesburg applicant groups should fix first: the renewal takes months and the desk sends people away for 11 months' validity. Charlotte has the South African desk.

BA purser, and the elephant story being the hero story the sheet marks down is my rule breaking thread in a South African setting. The escalation, not the elephant. The recruiter has confirmed the sheet from the South African desk.

@gulfbound2026 the queue organised and the elephant untold at day 19 is a candidate the sheet liked and the Johannesburg batch is calling at day 20 to 45 this round. @marcusdxb the elephant is retired by order of this thread.
