Recruiter, Cape Town, and the photo question is in the Emirates photo thread, the Kerala thread, the Lagos thread, the Nigerian thread, the Nairobi thread, the Kochi thread and every regional one as a paragraph. The desk sends more candidates away for the photo than for anything else and the recruiters have never written the spec in one place. Here it is, from the desk.

    The two photos

The full length: standing, facing the camera, the whole body from head to feet, the arms at the sides or one hand on the hip, business dress (the women: a knee length skirt or trousers with a blouse or a fitted top, the heels; the men: a suit or the trousers and shirt, the shoes polished), no coat, no bag. The head and shoulders: facing the camera, the shoulders square, the smile with the teeth, the hair as it would be at the assessment (the women: up, off the face; the men: short and neat).

    The background

Plain, light, one colour (white or cream or light grey), no pattern, no furniture, no window, no studio backdrop with the clouds or the gradient. A wall. The studio backdrop is the single most common reason the desk sends a candidate away in Lagos, Kochi, Cairo and Nairobi and the plain wall at home passes.

    The retouching

None. The desk compares the photo with the person in front of them and a retouched photo that does not match the face is a desk conversation and sometimes a send away. The skin as it is, the teeth as they are, the body as it is. The recruiters are not photographing a model; they are checking the candidate meets the grooming standard in a photograph before they meet them.

    The phone versus the studio

The phone against a wall in daylight passes. The studio with the plain wall and no retouching passes. The studio with the backdrop and the retouching fails. The phone photo taken by a friend who stands back far enough for the full length and does not use a filter is the one most of the hired candidates on this forum used (Rosie's thread). The studio is not needed and is often the problem.

The ten reasons the desk sends people away

    1. The studio backdrop. 2. The retouching that does not match the face. 3. The full length that cuts off the feet. 4. The coat or the bag in the full length. 5. The hair down in the head shot when the standard is up. 6. The casual clothes. 7. The filter. 8. The photo that is years old. 9. The group photo cropped. 10. The sunglasses, the hat, the hand over the face, which happen more than you would think.

For every applicant at every event

A plain wall, daylight, business dress, the hair as it will be, the full length with the feet, the head shot with the teeth, a friend with a phone, no filter, no backdrop, no retouching. The desk will pass you in five seconds and the five seconds are the first impression the whole day is built on.

Emirates, Mumbai, and the friend with a phone against a white wall was mine, as I wrote, and the desk passed me in five seconds while the studio backdrop girl beside me was sent away. Charlotte has written the spec the desk has never written. Pin it.

Lagos, Qatar joiner, and the Lagos studio backdrop with the clouds is the thing that emptied the queue at both events and Charlotte's reason one is the Lagos reason. The plain wall. The applicant groups in Lagos should have this thread as the first message.

Kochi, and the Kerala studio retouching that does not match the face is reason two in Kochi and the desk conversation is the one the applicants fear. The phone against the wall. Charlotte's ten reasons are the Kochi desk's ten reasons.

Nairobi, Qatar event next month, and the photo is retaken this weekend against the wall with the feet in and no filter, because of this thread. The ten reasons are the checklist. Thank you from the Nairobi groups.

Emirates, Cairo, and the Cairo studio retouching was my first application's send away and the plain wall was my second's pass, exactly as Nadia described. Charlotte has settled the photo for every regional thread at once.

Emirates upper deck, and the grooming standard in a photograph before they meet you is the right description of what the photo is for and the retouching defeats it. The recruiters want the face they will see. Charlotte has the desk's reasoning as well as the spec.

Chennai, events next quarter, and the photo thread I needed is here and the ten reasons are printed. The full length with the feet is the one I would have got wrong. Thank you.

@melissak the retake this weekend against the wall with the feet in is the whole thread in one action and the Nairobi desk will pass you in five seconds. @deepa2002 the feet are reason three and the most common after the backdrop.
